Two students will be advancing to state after continuous practice helped them advance past regionals.

Both Seth Hamby and Ashlan Armstrong performed exceptionally at regionals, giving them the opportunity to compete at state on May 22- 23. The duo will both be competing in different events, Seth in Informative Speaking and Ashlan in LD debate.

The entire speech and debate team spent all year preparing for possible advancement by practicing constantly both during and after school and competing at invitational meets to better improve their chances of placing. While this may seem like an impossible task, well-seasoned coaches, Clint and Jenifer Adams, back them with more than twenty years experience under their belts. Although confident with such experienced coaches teaching them, each student has fears of their own.

“I am concerned that I will not have enough evidence on my topic to properly make a speech” Says Hamby

Most would agree that Seth’s fears are rational, given the fact he is only allowed thirty minutes to prepare a seven minute speech; but despite being nervous, he is excited to go to state and visit Austin again.

While the pair’s coaches are expecting overall victory out of their pupils, they also hope each one of them accomplishes personal achivements in the competition as well.

“I hope they give the best speeches of their lives,” says Mrs. Adams “leave nothing on the table and have no regrets when it’s all over”.
